Luke 4:13
Now
when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an
opportune time (NKJV).
The
account of the Temptation of Jesus by Satan in the book of Luke chapter 4 where
Jesus triumphed over the devil is no new story. But verse 13 draws serious
attention that should be practical to us today. It says that the devil
retreated temporarily, for a while, for a season, for an opportune time. After trying
to tempt Jesus to renounce his Lordship and worship him (Satan), scripture says
that he retreated so that he will come back again some other time to tempt.
What
we learn from this is to be ready to fight for victory at all time in little
areas of our lives. As we face situations, we can only defeat the devil through
conscious dependence on God’s word and the move of the Holy Spirit within us.
One
thing that is inevitable is that temptation can come at any time but victory is
also sure every time. Victory is sure because we are not the people who fight
our battles; Christ fought and won our battles over two millenniums ago.
When
you want to fight a mighty man, you do not look out for his strengths and feel
satisfied but more importantly, you focus on the person’s weaknesses because it
is only through these weaknesses that you will overcome him. In the same
manner, our enemy looks out for our weaknesses because we are vulnerable in
those areas.
Daily
victories therefore imply that we focus on little steps we take on a daily
basis. It is the little victories that we gain on a daily basis that gives us
total victories in major areas of our lives. Jesus was hungry and so vulnerable
to food but He won the battle. The same lesson can be applied in our situations
today.
